BFHPs Multi-Service Center (MSC) hosts five (5) programs/services:
Housing Case Management provides both housing search and placement and housing retention services (the case managers at MSC provide Housing Case Management, Shelter plus care, AND Rep Payee case management). Case managers assist homeless clients to find and obtain permanent housing. They work with clients to increase their income, develop sound money management and budgeting, and assist clients to become stable and self sufficient enough to obtain and maintain housing. Activities include individual case management and bi-weekly housing clinics.
Housing Retention Services:
The housing retention services work with those clients in the Representative Payee program, providing money management services to clients on SSI in support of the clients effort to maintain housing.
The Shelter Plus Care (S+C) program works with homeless and disabled clients, providing housing retention and supportive case management services. BFHP maintains a waiting list and serves eligible program participants in compliance with the City of Berkeley Shelter Plus Care Program policies and procedures. BFHP provides intake and supportive housing case management in order to attain the program goals and outcome measures. During the FY11 program year, MSC staffing resources were reallocated and there is now a dedicated SC Case Manager for the 48 S+C caseload. BFHP also has a small S+C contract with the County of Alameda and generally has 6-8 S+C clients as part of this contract
BFHP is part of Berkeley’s COACH Collaborative which maintains 11 chronically homeless individuals in permanent housing. BFHP serves as Rep Payee for each COACH participant.
The Winter Shelter is a combined effort of Berkeley and Oakland. There are 50 beds dedicated to Berkeley homeless residents and BFHP coordinates the distribution and assignment of these beds through 6 community agencies. The program operates annually from November 15th through April 15th.
The Quarter Meal program provides a hot meal, Monday through Friday at the BFHP MSC site (2362 Bancroft Way). It is a sit-down dinner Monday through Thursday and on Friday, the meal is packed to go and handed out at the same location.
The daily Hot meal program includes:
- A hot entree, salad, vegetable, fresh fruit, bread and a beverage.
- A daily vegetarian option.
- Early seating for disabled participants, where they are assisted with their dinner and attended to by a staff or volunteers.
- Seating for the general public 10 at a time to make sure that each person can be personally greeted and assisted with their food choices.
- An opportunity to meet BFHP service staff and receive assistance for their immediate and emergency needs, including shelter placement.
- A second serving after all have been served once. Food is served until there is none left, or the client line dissipates.
