Archie was one of the very first clients we worked with when we opened our Veteran services office in Sacramento. He was there when the office first opened, and even helped our team set up the furniture. “I reached out and they were there to help me. Angela and her crew were wonderful.”
Archie was born and raised in the Sacramento area. He joined the army in 1974 and served for nearly a decade. After his discharge, he lived in Southern California for a time, where he had a daughter.
Eventually, he moved back up north. He had good work through his local laborer union, until about ten years ago, when a heart attack knocked his life off track. He had bypass surgery at a VA hospital, but when he was recovered, his living situation was no longer available, so he wound up living in motel rooms or in his car. He called the Veteran hotline number several times but didn’t get much traction until 2018 when our Roads Home program first came on the scene.
From the time we first met Archie, it took just about two months to get help him get his documents in order and get him connected with all the resources he was eligible for. He was soon moving into his new home.
He is now retired but stays busy by helping with his brother’s landscaping business and doing street ministry to those in his community who are experiencing homelessness.
